They can. A modification can affect value, performance, theft attractiveness or repair cost, and insurers can have different definitions of what must be declared.
Factory option or later modification?
A car may have left the factory with larger wheels, body styling or upgraded equipment, or a previous owner may have added them later. The distinction can matter when you describe the car to an insurer.
Used cars need careful checking
If a car looks different from standard, ask what has been changed and keep evidence. Suspension, exhausts, engine software, non-standard wheels and cosmetic changes are obvious examples, but policies vary.
Do not discover the modification after buying
Insurance questions are one more reason to inspect the equipment level before you buy. If in doubt, ask the insurer how it wants the alteration described.
If anything on the car is non-standard, describe it accurately when asking for cover and check the effect before buying.
