Often they are mainly a styling choice. They can sharpen appearance, but larger wheels may bring dearer tyres, less protection from potholes and a firmer ride.
Price one tyre before buying the car
The simplest reality check is to search the exact tyre size fitted. Multiply by four and compare it with the cost on the smaller factory wheel option.
Look closely for damage
Kerbing is obvious, but also inspect for cracks, buckles and vibration on the test drive. Low-profile tyres give the wheel less cushioning against poor road surfaces.
They can affect more than tyres
Different wheels can change ride comfort and sometimes insurance if they are non-standard. If a previous owner fitted them, establish whether they are an original option or later modification.
If the car has larger or non-standard wheels, check both replacement tyre prices and any insurance implications before deciding they are worth having.
