Before moving
Check warning lights illuminate and then go out normally, the clutch or automatic selection behaves properly, steering assistance works and there are no unexplained noises. Test air conditioning, windows and basic controls.
While driving
Use a mix of low-speed manoeuvring, ordinary acceleration, braking and faster road driving where safe. Notice vibration, pulling, steering feel, gear changes, clutch bite and whether the engine reaches and holds a normal temperature.
After the drive
Look underneath for fresh leaks, listen after switching off and check for smells or fans behaving unusually. If the car matters enough to buy, it matters enough to inspect properly.
