Before You Buy a Used Volkswagen Polo

A used Polo can be an appealing small car, but the VW badge should not replace the normal checks you would make on any second-hand vehicle.

Buy on condition and evidence

Check servicing, MOT history, tyres, brakes, warning lights and operation of the electrical equipment. A clean-looking cabin does not prove careful mechanical maintenance.

Compare versions carefully

Engine, gearbox, trim and wheel size can change the way the car drives and what it costs to maintain. Automatic versions in particular should be judged on the exact transmission and service requirements.

Do an insurance comparison before deciding

A Polo and similarly priced Fiesta or Corsa may produce quite different premiums for the same driver. Obtain actual quotations rather than choosing on assumptions about brand or size.

Before choosing a Polo over a similar small hatchback, compare actual insurance costs together with the asking prices.
