Saving 5 mpg may save very little
If you drive only a few thousand miles, a large percentage improvement in fuel economy may translate into a modest annual cash saving. Paying thousands more for the car to achieve it can make little sense.
Short journeys have their own demands
Cars used infrequently can suffer flat batteries, seized brakes and tyres that age before they wear out. Some diesel systems are also poorly suited to repeated short journeys.
Buy for the use you really have
A straightforward petrol, hybrid or electric car may each make sense depending on charging, journey length and budget. Work from your real routine rather than choosing by official efficiency figure alone.
